SHARED READING : DAISY'S BIG HEART (WEEK 1)

WHAT IS SHARED READING?

Shared reading is a reading experience where children read a book together with help from their teacher. Shared reading is designed to be interactive and spark conversation about a text. It also allows teachers to demonstrate adept reading strategies for children to mimic.

The main purpose of shared reading is to provide children with an enjoyable experience that gets them excited about reading. During these sessions, children are introduced to a variety of authors and types of texts to find out what kinds of stories and topics they enjoy.

Today, I'm going to share our 30-minute shared reading journey over 4 weeks.

I created a 9-page storybook and printed it on two A4 papers - A3 size when combined. I just used a home printer for this.

In the first week, I guided the children word by word. This was especially helpful for those who still cannot read English on their own. Remember, this is not a phonics session — but it does help develop phonemic awareness in children. Young readers can learn about the relationship between spoken language and printed text through shared reading.

During shared reading, vocal and spoken interactions are encouraged. Since Malay is our mother tongue, I asked them questions in Malay to make sure they understood the story.

After reading, I demonstrated the sentence:

"Kitty jumped down!"

What’s more exciting for a child than jumping into a box, right?

So, we ended the session with everyone taking turns to jump into a box — just like Kitty. Me included! One of the joys of being a kindergarten teacher is that you get to be a kid again. But always remember: safety first! Don’t say I didn’t warn you 😄

 To be continued...
